Berwick Hills School Council

Berwick Hills School are proud of their active School Council. They meet regularly to share ideas and discuss issues. Each class from Year 2 to Year 6 in the school has a class representative - it is their responsibility to share their opinions and thoughts with the rest of the council, keep any important notes and report any developments back to the other children (and the teacher) in their class.

Each year the previous school Council assist in running the election for the next group of children to become elected as School Councillors. This allows children to experience the democratic process and become active democratic citizens. Our school becomes a polling station for the day!

Examples of work undertaken by the School Council:

  • Fundraising events are organised for different charities.
  • The School Council created a ‘Staying Safe Policy’ for children so they know what to do and who to speak to in order to stay safe.
  • Aworry box’ was introduced to each classroom so that children can let an adult know if they are worried about something.
  • The children have given their views to the Headteacher and a Governor on what the school website should include for children.
  • Representatives from other groups in school such as ‘Eco- Warriors, Head Boy and Girl, Smart Crew attend meetings to share information and give updates on what is happening across school.
  • The Council have undertaken site walks with Site Manager to see how the school site is managed and kept safe.
  • They have met with local Town Counsellors to share their views on what is important to children and what could be improved in the local area.
  • They learn about democratic processes
