Governing Body

Governing Body – Berwick Hills Primary School

Berwick Hills Primary School has a supportive and proactive Governing Body made up of Local Authority representatives, community members, staff, and parents/carers. Governors work together to support the school and its wider community.

Role of Governors

The governing body has three key responsibilities:

  • Setting the school’s vision and strategic direction
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for pupil outcomes and staff performance
  • Overseeing the school’s finances to ensure effective use of resources

Governors work closely with the Headteacher and senior leaders to support continuous improvement but do not take part in the day-to-day running of the school.

What Governors Do

  • Set the school’s aims and priorities
  • Approve and monitor the budget
  • Appoint the Headteacher
  • Provide both support and challenge to school leaders

Skills and Commitment

Governors are expected to:

  • Attend meetings regularly
  • Contribute to discussions and decision-making
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Complete relevant training

They bring a range of skills and share a commitment to improving outcomes for all pupils.

School Visits

Governors may visit the school, with a clear focus, to understand how plans and policies are working in practice. These visits support their strategic role and do not involve inspection or management.

Get Involved

Becoming a governor is a rewarding opportunity to develop new skills and make a meaningful contribution to the lives of children and the local community.
